At dusk, I met sweet Maryam again,
And lost myself, as I always then.
One glance into her shining eyes—
The whole world faded from my skies.
The streets fell silent, time held still,
My restless heart forgot its will.
All I am, all I ever see,
Lives in her eyes… my galaxy.
She tilted her head, a playful dare,
Soft laughter lingered in her stare,
“Why stare so?” she laughed, so light,
“And spare me your song today… alright?”
I placed my hand upon my chest,
“Have I disturbed your royal rest?
Tell me, Maryam, what have I done?
Did I hurt you, my only one?”
She paused a moment, soft and slow,
“As far as I recall… long ago,
You hurt my heart—but made it right,
You said sorry… that very night.”
I searched my mind, found no trace,
No memory of such a case.
“Then tell me now, so I can mend,
And make that broken moment end.”
She laughed again, so soft, so sweet,
“I don’t recall… it’s all complete.
You fixed it then, let it be—
No more fault between you and me.”
But I stood firm, I would not bend,
“Then let me say sorry once again.
For every pain I cannot see,
Forgive it now… just forgive me.”
She leaned her chin upon her hand,
Eyes like stars I could not withstand.
“Well if you wish,” she said with delight,
“Then apologize… but do it right.”
Without a thought, I knelt right there,
A foolish prince, a love laid bare.
“In seven skies and earth below,
You are my galaxy’s only glow.
Forgive the fault I cannot find,
Yet please… forgive me… be always mine.
I’ll lift you close within my arms,
Through every day, through all life’s charms.”
“Your heart’s a garden—I belong,
A willing captive, forever strong.
Without my hummingbird, I fall apart,
You are the life inside my heart.”
I’ll remember every laugh, each smile,
Every birthday, each moment, mile by mile.
Every wish you softly say,
I’ll make it come true, come what may.
I’ll feed you sweets with my own hands,
Adorn your palms with henna strands.
Comb your hair on Eid so bright,
And guard your dreams through every night.
No thorn shall touch your gentle feet,
No sorrow shall our love defeat.
Through every storm, I’ll stand for you,
No matter what we’re going through.
“You are the flower all flowers praise,
The light that brightens all my days.
I’ll be the one to help you bloom,
And guard your beauty, chase all gloom.”
“You are my Noor-e-Mann, my light,
My endless day, my peaceful night.
My sweetest joy, my shining flame,
Forever, love, I call your name.”
One day we’ll sit, our children near,
And I will tell them, year by year,
How heaven sent an angel true,
And all my prayers led me to you.
I’ll never turn my eyes away,
No girl can take your place, no way.
If you say it’s day, my sun will rise,
If you whisper night, my stars will shine.
“And if one day you cry for me,
Then punish as you wish, let it be.
For every tear, I’ll take the blame,
Your justice, love—I’ll bear the same.”
I always wished for an angel true,
A girl whose smile could light my view.
Whose glance could calm my deepest fears,
And chase away my darkest tears.
Someone to hold me when I fall,
To guide me gently through it all,
To love me more with each new day,
And help me grow in every way.
And you have all these qualities,
The light, the love, the gentle ease.
That’s why I ask for nothing above,
Except your heart… and all your love.
At last, I smiled, soft and free,
“Is my apology enough for thee?”
Maryam paused, her playful spark,
Caught in a dreamy, mischievous art.
“Mary?” I laughed, “You still there?”
She blinked, a teasing, tender stare.
“What am I to make of all I see?
An apology… a love letter… or a proposal to me?”
I grinned, “It’s both, as you can see.”
“And the love letter?” she teased at me.
“That comes later,” I said with a grin,
“But first—tell me, did I win?”
She smiled so soft, “You are forgiven…
Now rise… people are watching, listen!
They stare at you everywhere,
Laughing at you kneeling there.”
“Oh?” I teased, “My fearless queen,
Now cares what others have seen?”
She tapped my chest and softly said,
“Oh hush… not scared, just silly instead.”
“Come now, let’s go, the wind is strong,
The clouds are heavy—it might rain along.”
Hand in hand we walked away,
Through the quiet wind of a fading day.
Deep inside, I know it’s true—
No love like hers could ever bloom anew.
Her glance alone will chart my way…
Forever mine, my Noor-e-Mann, my stay.
And if the world forgets my name one day…
Let it be—
For her heart is the only place I belong.

Author’s Note (Summary) :
Last Saturday I went to see my love… the sun was slowly setting like it was tired, and the wind was a bit extra that day—like even it was excited to see her before me. And then when I saw Maryam, just like always, the moment I looked into her beautiful eyes, I completely lost myself. Everything happening around us faded away. The world seemed to vanish, because my whole universe lives inside her eyes.
After a moment, she noticed the way I was staring and tilted her head with that mischievous smile.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, eyes sparkling.
Then she laughed softly and teased, “Shahzad, please… don’t start singing again.”
I looked at her, mock-surprised. “Mary! What happened? Did it bother you? Tell me… have I ever caused you any pain?”
She paused, thinking, then said, “As far as I remember… you only hurt my heart once. But then you immediately apologized.”
The problem was… I didn’t remember hurting my fairy at all. So I said, “Oh really? Then tell me what I said to hurt my queen so that I can apologize properly.”
She giggled, shaking her head. “I don’t remember what you said… but I do remember that you apologized right away. So there’s no need.”
I shook my head stubbornly. “No, there is a need. I want to apologize again. So tell me.”
Still smiling, she said, “I don’t remember what you said, but if you want to apologize so badly… then go ahead and do it now.”
“Alright, listen then,” I said.
“Okay, let’s hear it,” she replied, resting her chin on her hand and staring at me with sparkling eyes. It was as if she couldn’t wait to hear what I was about to say.
Without thinking, I dropped to one knee in front of her, as if I were proposing, and like a completely silly, hopelessly romantic lover, I began:
“In all the seven skies and the earth beneath them, you are my only galaxy. My life lives inside you. I kneel before you and ask forgiveness for the mistake I must have made somehow… even though you no longer remember it. But you do remember that I made a mistake, so please… please… please forgive me.
I promise that whatever happened will never happen again. I will carry you close to my heart and in my arms so that your blessed feet never tire. Every day I will bring flowers and place them in your hair myself.
Your heart is like a garden, and I am its prisoner. If I don’t see my cute , lovely Hummingbird, my heart feels dead and my breaths lose their meaning. But the moment I see you again, I remember that I’m alive.
I will remember every single one of your birthdays. Every little mood, every little tantrum, will live in my heart. I will never refuse anything you ask. I will feed you with my own hands. If you wish, on Eid, I will even apply henna on your hands myself. I will comb your hair. I will bring every happiness in the world and place it at your feet.
As long as I am there, not even a single thorn will touch your feet. If anyone dares think badly of you, they will face my wrath. No matter the time or circumstances, I will always hold your hand.
You are a beautiful flower, the queen of flowers… and flowers are at their best when they bloom. So I will become your gardener, watering my beloved flower every day, taking care of it so that my beautiful flower never withers.
You are the light of my heart, my sweet Noor-e-Mann. You are so innocent, and I will always protect your innocence so you can remain happy and pure forever. My sweet flower, you are the sweetest happiness in my life. My heart belongs to you, and my love for you is endless.
We will live happily in our life and in our home together, and I will never allow anyone to destroy our happiness. My glowing moon, for you I am even ready to leave the whole world. One day, I will sit for hours with our children and tell them stories about your beauty—about how my Lord sent a beautiful angel from paradise just for me.
And today I promise you that apart from you, I will never even look at another girl. If you say it is day, then for me the sun will rise. And if you say it is night, then for me the stars will appear, and I will never give you a reason for tears. And if someday tears come because of me… you can push me off the roof, or punish me however you wish. Every punishment from you will be acceptable to me.
I have always searched for a girl who would stand beside me at every turn of life. Someone whose single smile could make all my worries disappear, no matter how troubled I am. Someone who would hold me if I fall and give me courage. Someone who would tell me when I’m wrong and help me become a better person… someone who could change me so completely that every moment I would think only of her.
And you have all these qualities. That’s why I want nothing from you… except you and your love.
Now tell me… has my apology been accepted in my queen’s court?”
Maryam stared at me for a moment, lost in thought, and I laughed a little louder. “Mary! Hello? Are you even listening to me?”
Finally, she replied, smiling that mischievous smile, “Are you apologizing… writing me a love letter… or proposing to me?”
I laughed and said, “It’s an apology… and a proposal.”
She raised an eyebrow playfully. “And the love letter?”
“I’ll give you that later,” I said with a grin. “For now, just tell me—am I forgiven?”
“Yes,” Maryam said softly. “Your apology is accepted. Now hurry up and stand… people are watching. Who knows what they might think about this?”
I chuckled. “Oh really? Now my fearless queen is afraid of what people will say?”
She placed her hand gently on my chest, smiling. “I’m not afraid of anyone. You just made us look so funny. Now come on, let’s go from here. It’s getting late, and the wind is getting stronger… feels like it might start raining.”
And then, hand in hand, we started walking away.
The beautiful moments I spent with Maryam that day are something I will never forget. The place she holds in my heart can never belong to anyone else.
No one… could ever replace my Noor-e-Mann.
